David Anthony

David Anthony

Funeral Director, Embalmer, & Cremationist

David was born in 1955 in Columbus, Ohio to Dr. Paul and Patricia (Kucko) Anthony. The second of six children, he was raised in Wadsworth, Ohio, where he attended Sacred Heart Grade School (and is forever grateful to the Vincentian Sisters of Charity for their love and patience) and graduated in 1973 from Walsh Jesuit High School. He began at the University of Akron, considering a career as a Physicist, and spent his time working at the funeral home to pay for college.

However, on February 26, 1974, Paul and Patricia were abducted and murdered in Firestone Park. David was named guardian of his 4 siblings and took on the responsibility of maintaining the funeral home. He quit college and left for The Pittsburgh Institute of Mortuary Science in March 1975, graduated in 1976, served a one year apprenticeship, and became a licensed Funeral Director and Embalmer in May of 1977.

A.J. Kucko died in 1976. The management of the funeral home was taken on by Mark Hayden, who unfortunately died in October of 1976, and so the management was passed to James Burtchin who oversaw David's apprenticeship.

By June of 1977, David realized he never had the opportunity consider what dedicating his life to a career actually meant. He and his future wife, Diane, decided to sell the business to explore other career options. Several parties expressed interest and Earl Stampfle signed a contract to purchase the funeral home. When Mr. Burtchin and staff discovered the business was for sale and that it had not been offered to them for purchase, they resigned Thanksgiving weekend. That December, the home did 50% more funerals with a third of the staff. Amidst this whirlwind, David realized that staff morale made a huge difference in the prosperity of the business. Earl was unable to secure financing to purchase the home, so it was taken off the market. David and his fiancée, Diane, realized this career was truly a vocation. So David and Diane (nee Harouny) married in January of 1978. They never looked back.

David used the tragedy in his own life as a basis for his relationship to families. He was able to make crucial changes to the ways things had 'always been done' but maintained his rich family history of service and commitment to the families. He continues adjusting the business to accommodate the changing needs of families, and has reinforced a reputation of honesty and devotion to the families he serves. Integrity is a value Dave is defined by.

When Dave is not at the funeral home (which is rare), he spends time with his 7 grandkids, attending their sports games and events, and having an absolute blast.

Currently, Dave is a member of Queen of Heaven Catholic Church in Green, but has also attended St. Francis de Sales, St. Paul, and St. John the Baptist Catholic Churches. He serves as a Eucharistic Minister, Lector, and Usher. He is also a member of the Knights of Columbus Third and Fourth Degrees.
