Madeline Bartz Obituary

Madeline Elizabeth Bartz, 93, passed peacefully at her home on July 13, 2021. She was surrounded by her daughters and husband.

She was born November 12, 1927, the second of four daughters, to Louis and Elizabeth Germanis in Ann Arbor, Michigan. She met James Bartz at the St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox church dance in 1953 and they were married August 22, 1954. She worked at King-Seeley in Ann Arbor. In 1966, the family moved to Ohio where Jim was manager of Brown Derby Restaurant. They were in the restaurant business for years and owned An-Jo's Italian Restaurant in Niles, Ohio until 1982. Madeline worked at AVI until her retirement in 2006, at 80 years of age.

Madeline lost her hearing at a young age and wore a hearing aid. She learned to read lips and communicate with others well before there was closed captioning on televisions and telephones.

Jim and Madeline moved from Warren to Akron in 2006 to be closer to family. Madeline leaves behind her husband, James Nicholas, of 66 years; daughters Elizabeth Zoe (John Chames) Bartz of Akron; Helen Catherine (John) Daley of Pittsburg, Kansas; and Nicolette Margaretta (Renold) Koozer of Copley, Ohio. She also leaves behind her grandson Zachary James Renold Koozer, granddaughter Nicole Marie (Jeff) Chatham, adopted grandson Nikolas Sebastian Frazier, and great grandson James Atticus Chatham, in addition to the many relatives including her sister-in-law Presvytera Zaf Bartz, brother-in-law Tom Bartz, nieces and nephews, neighbors, and sweet church friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Louis and Elizabeth Germanis; sisters Frosso Georgopoulous, Katina Hennigan, and Sophia VanAernum; brother and sister-in-law Peter and Lorraine Bartz; brother-in-law Rev George Bartz, sister-in-law Marge Bartz; and godson Steven Georgopoulos.

The Greek Orthodox Church is very important to the family. Madeline attended St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church in Ann Arbor, Michigan; St. Demetrios in Warren, Ohio; and Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church in Akron, Ohio. You could count on seeing the family in church and at every activity held there.

The family would like to thank Summa Home Health, Senior Helpers and the Akron Fire Department for helping us this past month. The aid and assistance provided brought relief to the 24/7 time needed.
