October 25, 1937 ~ August 21, 2023 (age 85) 85 Years Old

Obituary

John Zmurk, 85, died peacefully at home, with the full consolation of the sacraments, surrounded by family, on Monday, August 21, after a battle with cancer.
John had a brilliant mind, graduating from high school at age 15 and college at 19. He was a graduate of University of Dayton School of Engineering and then earned an MBA from Xavier University. He first worked at Wright Patterson Air Force Base, followed by a lengthy career at General Electric in the nuclear sub division. Prior to fully retiring, he worked as an engineer for Summit County.
John was an active member of St. Bernard Catholic Church in Akron, where he served as a Eucharistic Minister, Lector, and high school PSR teacher.
What John was mostly known for was his generous nature and tremendous faith. He was an outstanding example of a strong man who lived simply and humbly, pouring his life out for his family and friends. He was a devout Catholic and attended daily Mass to receive our Lord in the Eucharist.
John was a master craftsman and woodworker, building often from his own designs. When his children were little he began building bunkbeds, building blocks, indoor slides, jungle gyms, and over many decades has built dressers, dining tables, desks, cribs, bed frames, murphy desks, crafting shelves, decks, elaborate wooden swing sets, train tables, rabbit hutches, and anything else his children and grandchildren requested. Grandpa's Workshop was his happy place and it will be sorely missed!
John was preceded in death by his parents John William Zmurk, Sr. and Theresa Hannan Zmurk, stepmother Rosemary Luckey Zmurk, and his sister Clara Zmurk (Don) Pazdera. John is survived by his former wife, Patricia Worth and their six children: Greg (Laure) Zmurk, Teresa(Gary) Giorgio, Marie (David) Monsour, Philip Zmurk, Joseph Zmurk, and Paula (James) Gilbride. John is also survived by his treasured 28 grandchildren: Emily and Audrey Zmurk; Marie (Joshua), Thomas (Ashlee), Daniel (Iliana), Joseph, Monica, Kate (Joud), Michael (Zhafira), Nicholas, Gianna, and Samuel Giorgio; Regina, James, John, Caroline, Christine, Simon, Grace, Victor, Lucy, and Lea Monsour; Emma, Jasmine, and Madison Zmurk; and Jackson (Olivia), Troy, and Joseph Gilbride. John is also survived by four great grand children and three more awaiting birth this year, as well as many nieces and nephews and faithful friends.
The family will receive friends on Sunday, August 27, from 5-8 pm at the Anthony Funeral Home Kucko-Anthony-Kertesz Chapel, 1990 S. Main St. in Akron.
