Joan Maty, 88, passed away on Novemeber 5, 2021.
Joan was born in Akron on March 6, 1933 to the late Peter & Susanna Pavelchak. Joan was deeply devoted to her faith and was a lifetime member of St. Nicholas Orthodox Church, where she was a member of the Ladies Altar Aid and the Church Choir, St. Olga's Sisterhood, the Fellowship of Sts. Simeon & Ann, and was a teacher at the church school. She was a 1951 graduate of East High School and a graduate of the University of Akron and retired as a teacher from the Akron Public Schools in 1993 after 22 years of service. She was named as a Jennings Scholar for the 1981-82 school year. Joan was also a member of the Akron Symphony Chorus.
In addition to her parents, Joan was preceded in death by her husband, sub-deacon Paul Maty; sister Dorothy Adamich & brother Ed Pavelchak; She is survived by her son Thomas Maty; daughter Paula (James) Emrick; grandchildren Andrew James & Anika Suzanne Emrick; sister Patricia Pavelchak.
The family will receive friends on Tuesday, November 9, from 5-7 pm at St. Nicholas Orthodox Church, 755 S Cleveland Ave, Mogadore, OH 44260, where a funeral service will follow immediately at 7 pm. A Panachida will take place on Wednesday, 11 am, at the church, where Joan will lie in state for one hour prior to the service. Burial will follow at St. Nicholas Cemetery.
