Janet Canning, 69, of Uniontown, Ohio passed away of heart disease.
She was the daughter of the late David and Elizabeth Canning of Akron, Ohio and grew up in the Kenmore neighborhood, where she made lifelong friends. She was a member of Park United Methodist Church in Akron and graduated from Kenmore High School in 1970. Janet earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Education from the University of Akron and began a teaching career with the Norton Public Schools in Norton, Ohio. During this time, she completed a law degree in the evenings and graduated with a Juris Doctor degree from the University of Akron School of Law. Janet moved to the Chicago area for a career change but soon was drawn back to the classroom and returned to teaching in District 203 in Naperville, Illinois. After retiring from teaching, Janet moved back to the Akron area where she volunteered as a GED tutor in Kenmore and later spent many hours helping at the Kenmore Free Store, a charity established by two neighborhood churches, until health issues forced her to stop.
Janet is survived by brother James (Martha) Canning and sister Carol (Darrell) Hogue both of Wadsworth, OH, sister Catherine (Douglas) Schwall of Green, OH and DJ (David) Maggio of Doylestown, OH. She is also survived by nieces and nephews Emily (Eric) Canning Dean of Wadsworth, OH, David (Erin) Hogue of Dublin, OH, Michael (Amanda) Hogue of Medina, OH, Brian Schwall of Canton, OH, Deanna (Jacob) Schmucker of Massillon, OH, Kevin Schwall of Lakewood, OH, Anthony (Mackenzie) Maggio of Columbus, OH and Ben, Sam, Harper and Archer Hogue.
The family will receive friends Friday, 5 to 7 p.m. at the Anthony Funeral Home Kucko-Anthony-Kertesz, 1990 S. Main St. Akron, Ohio 44301. Memorial service will be held Saturday, 1 p.m. at the funeral home. Rev. Ken Price officiating. Masks and Social Distancing Required.
