Donald 'Don' Joseph Lane, 85, passed away on January 2, 2022.
Donald Lane left his hometown of New York City in 1954 to attend the University of Dayton and play basketball for the Flyers. He began his teaching/coaching career at Mansfield St. Peter's in Ohio (1958-59), followed by Lima (OH) Central Catholic as head basketball coach. In 1964, he moved his family to Cuyahoga Falls where Don spent the next 29 years at Cuyahoga Falls High School serving as head basketball coach, tennis coach, and directing summer school activities while teaching in the business department.
After coaching, Don was active as Commissioner of the Metro Conference and Western Reserve Conference for 15 years. Upon retirement from teaching, Don was associated with the Mid-American Conference as an observer of basketball officials at Kent State from 1994-2010.
While attending high school at St. Ann's Academy under Coach Lou Carnesecca, Don was recognized as one of the top basketball players in New York City. )Following his senior year at the University of Dayton, Don was named First-Team All-Catholic All-American. Dayton inducted Don into its Hall of Fame in 1984. Don is also a member of the Cuyahoga Falls High School Hall of Fame, as well as the Summit County Basketball Coaches Hall of Fame. Don coached Cuyahoga Falls men's basketball for 13 years, compiling a 176-95 record.
One of five children of Marcella and Frank Lane of New York City, Don's family includes his wife of 63 years, Joyce; children: Doug (Diane), Edmond, Oklahoma; Dan (Stacey), Port Charlotte, Florida; Christi Fritz (Kevin), Orlando, Florida; David (Lisa), Hackettstown, New Jersey; Nancy Lane, Cuyahoga Falls; and Dennis (Beth), Cuyahoga Falls; brothers John, Frankie and Bill, predeceased; and Sister Frances Lane of the Sacred Heart Order.
Don was blessed with 13 grandchildren: Natasha (Warren) Lanier and Donald (Jenni) Johnson; Matt Lane and Justin (Christy) Lane; Ryan (Kate) Lane and Rory Lane; Travis and Kasey Lane; Erica, Alex, Nick, Zach, and Ethan Lane; and five great-grandchildren-Reagan and Braxton Lanier; Jaxson and Lucy Johnson; and Presley Lane.
As an avid golfer, Don enjoyed his many years of golfing (one Ace) and card playing (no Aces) with his many friends.
The family extends their heartfelt thanks to Kristy & Amy of Hospice of Summa, for their compassionate care.
The family will receive friends on Friday, January 7, from 4-7 pm at the Anthony Funeral Home McGowan-Reid & Santos Chapel, 247 Stow ave (at Third St., one block north of Portage Trail in) Cuyahoga Falls. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, January 8, at 10:00 am at St. Eugene Catholic Church 1821 Munroe Falls Ave. in Cuayhoga Falls. Interment will follow at Chestnut Hill Memorial Gardens.
