Dennis Onderak Obituary

Dennis J. Onderak, 72, passed away Monday, March 22, 2021 at his home in West Akron.
Dennis was born August, 31, 1948 and is preceded in death by his parents George and Anna (Kachmarik) Onderak.
Dennis had been an area resident almost his entire life. Dennis, father to Nicholas Onderak(Dayna)and Alicia McCann(Michael), grandfather to Brianna and Aidan. Dennis had a love for life and telling a great story. Dennis carried many fond memories of long cross country trips with his family over the years, and large family holiday gatherings at their country home. He loved to laugh, and see the beauty all around him. Dennis was a veteran of the US Army and professional electrical engineer for almost 30 years at Ohio Edison. He earned his B.S. in engineering from the University of Akron. Dennis was an avid reader, collector, enjoyed putting together model trains, and playing chess with his son, grandson, and computer. His children often joked that Clark Griswald may have been modeled after Denny Onderak from the long family vacations to the large holiday gatherings. At the holidays Dennis was infamous for having a present for everyone in the room (even people that showed up that he had never met). He loved horse racing, especially during Kentucky Derby time and often visited both Northfield Park and Thistledown racetracks with his father and son. He enjoyed photography and spending time in nature, and always seemed to have his 35mm in hand. He was a long-time member of Ohio Edison's Speaker Bureau and Toastmasters International and thoroughly enjoyed public (and private) speaking engagements. Dennis had an amazing singing voice that he shared joyfully at church (or in the car) and was offered church cantor positions on several occasions. Dennis had a deep faith instilled from his mother Anna, who was both a matriarch and patron of St. Nicholas Byzantine Church in Barberton where he served as an altar boy, and spent many years in the church Boy Scout troop. We know they are united again in Eternal Peace, Vicnaja Pamjat.
