Charles Gustafson Obituary

Charles A. Gustafson, Sr., 85, passed away on November 29, 2021 after a recent battle with cancer. Born in Greensburg, Pa on April 16, 1936, he was the son of the late Roy T. Sr. and Julia Gustafson.

Charles "Gus" was a 1955 graduate of Jeannette (Pa.) High School. After high school he entered the Air Force and was stationed at Dow Air Force Base in Bangor, Maine. In 1958 he married his high school sweetheart Shelvie (Byerly) and in 1959 they moved to Akron where he was then employed by the Firestone Tire & Rubber Co. for 22 years. Gus also worked for Republic Storage Systems and eventually retired from A. Shulman, Inc.

Apart from his love for Shelvie and his family, Gus was all about football. Playing football during the 1950's earned him the nickname "Gutty" for his overall toughness. It was all about playing the game on Friday night and then spending time with his girl Shelvie along with their friends at the local Islay's on Clay Ave. in Jeannette. His love for sports followed him to Akron where he played softball for Firestone and also became a member of the Firestone Country Club. After becoming a resident of Green in 1972, Gus also coached youth football. As a big sports fan, he followed his son and daughter through their respective sports and in recent years he also enjoyed watching his grandchildren in theirs. He was a loving father and grandfather who never wanted to miss a game.

Charles is preceded in death by his beloved wife of 55 years Shelvie (Byerly), his parents Roy T. Sr. and Julia, brothers Roy T. Jr., Thomas, and Richard, and brother in-law James Wilson. He is survived by his children Charles Gustafson, Jr. of Green and Rose (John) Back of Uniontown; grandchildren Sam and Sydney Back; sister Betty Jo Wilson of North Huntingdon, Pa.; sisters in-law Dorothy Gustafson of Akron, Kathryn Gustafson of Jeannette Pa. and brother in-law Kenneth Byerly of Delmont, Pa.; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Cremation has taken place and there will be no services. Inurnment will take place at Twin Valley Memorial Park in Delmont, Pa.
