Betty Phillips Obituary
Betty Jane Tomanek Phillips, age 90, is now with the Lord, passing away on June 28, 2021. She valued and lived her Catholic faith.
Betty was born in Akron, Ohio and graduated from Buchtel High School. She started as a teller at the BFG Federal Credit Union when she was 27 and retired as CEO-President at age 77. Betty valued working with staff and the architects on the designs and construction of the main office and Hudson Branch. She enjoyed the challenges of the financial world and serving the members.
Betty was an accomplished knitter and ice skater. She was also an avid golfer, often trying out various courses as the traveled, including the Jubilee Course at St. Andrews in Scotland. She volunteered for the Bridgestone Invitational Golf Tournament and was the Treasurer of the Summit County Sports Hall of Fame for many years. Betty especially loved Cape Cod and often wished to live by the sea.
Betty is survived by her daughter Ann Marie Phillips; nephews Michael Tomanek, Todd Kennedy, and Carl (Sally) Zimmerman; stepsons Philip (Pat) Phillips & Paul (Carole) Phillips. She was preceded in death by her husband Harvey G. Phillips; parents Mary & Michael Tomanek; sister Mary Ann Zimmerman and brother Alfred Tomanek.
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11AM on Friday, July 2 at St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church, 4019 Manchester Road, Akron OH 44319 where the family will receive friends from 10-11AM. Private interment at Ohio Western Reserve National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the church. Please consider doing one Act of Kindness in her memory.
