Obituary - Angelo Salvador Fortunato
Angelo Salvador Fortunato was born and raised in Akron, Ohio, passed away Sunday, September 24th, 2023. Angelo was a devoted and loving father, husband, son, and brother. He was the glue and epicenter of the Fortunato Family in the City of Green. A retired horticulture teacher of over 30 plus years of service with Buchtel High School and the Akron Public Schools. Angelo loved his craft, loved his students, and took the time to appreciate the small things in life. He was once quoted in the Akron Beacon Journal of feeling guilty of getting paid for his job. He truly enjoyed his profession, and as a result, he never worked a day in his life.
Angelo knew to never sweat the small stuff and to focus on the important things in life. His reputation was built on integrity, respect, honor, and overall friendship with everyone he came into contact with. He loved and laughed with his whole heart and never knew a stranger. Name-dropping him would get attention all around the Greater Akron area. Someone always knew who he was. Tremendous level of respect with his Family, friends, and former students. The door was always open, and there was always food awaiting visitors to solve the world's problems.
Angelo along with his two brothers Dave and Joe were proud Hoban High School graduates. Angelo was part of the Hoban High School Football team, and later moved on to become a member of the Lone Star Fraternity during his time at the University of Akron.
The Fortunato brothers were key players (along with their mother Mary) in the long running success of Mary's Garden Center located on Brown Street and Lovers Lane in Akron. If you purchased flowers, vegetables, pumpkins, or the flagship product of Christmas trees at the Garden Center, then you were lucky enough to meet the Fortunato Family at their peak.
Angelo was a faithful and loyal attendant of the 8am Mass every Sunday at Queen of Heaven Church for many years, and his entrance was always with a smile. He was a member of the Holy Name Society.
He is survived by his wife Cassie of 55 years; children Andrea, Vince (Beth), and Angelo
(Christal); brother-in-law and sister-in-law, George and Carol Deme; sister-in-law, Sue
Fortunato; sister-in-law Sharon Fortunato; nieces and nephews Joe, Gina (Craig), Lisa, Joey (Dana), Nicole (Dustin); grandchildren Dominic, Vinny, AJ, Anthony; cousins, family, and friends too numerous to list. He is preceded in death by his parents Joe and Mary Fortunato, son-in-law Jamie Rhodes, and he is reunited with his brothers Dave and Joe Fortunato. The kitchen table is now set and complete.
Calling hours will be held Thursday, September 28th, from 10:00am-11:00am at Queen of Heaven Church, 1800 Steese Road, Uniontown Ohio (Service will be live streamed at queenofheavenparish.org), followed immediately by a service at 11:00am. Burial will be held at Holy Cross Cemetery.
