W. Stuart Barnes passed away on May 11, 2024 after a short illness and a long life.
Stuart was born in Akron in 1925 to the late Harold and Esther (Apel) Barnes. He moved frequently as a boy due to his father's career, growing up in Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York, and Illinois. After attending Evanston Township High School in Illinois for three years he returned to Akron and graduated from Buchtel High School. Stuart attended Kent State University and earned a JD from the University of Akron School of Law. A lifelong learner and teacher, he also audited college courses in his retirement.
Summer vacations from his work with the US Treasury Department typically consisted of long family car trips out west. Stuart loved photography, hiking, train travel, card games, and spending time with family, and he did his best to combine them all on every trip. He managed to visit 49 states while never flying on an airplane. He always enjoyed meeting new people and exchanging stories. His lively curiosity and fondness for the natural world live on in his children and grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, Stuart was preceded in death by his wife of 66 years Alvira; and brother Harold F. "Nick" Barnes. He is survived by his children Kathy (Dave) Conrad, Dianne (James) Kenny and Michael Barnes; 6 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren.
Thank you to the staff at GentleBrook Homestead and Crossroads Hospice for their wonderful care of Stuart.
