Sophia E. (Chupak) Blanar

February 23, 1937 — December 18, 2024

Sophia Blanar was born February 23, 1937 on the Chupak family farm in New Wilmington, Pennsylvania to Willian Trefun and Magdalena Zubal Chupak. Sophia passed away peacefully in her home with her children by her side on December 18, 2024.
She attended Bethel schoolhouse until 8th grade, and then graduated from West Middlesex in 1955 where she was active in many clubs and sports like basketball and baseball. Sophia is preceded by parents and siblings: Mary Chupak Rawe, John Chupak, Lillian Hurchanik, Rosalie Wasson, William Chupak, Frank Chupak, Joe Chupak, Anne Kudelko, George "Zeke" Chupak, Esther Chupak, Julie Chupak, Harry Chupak, and an infant daughter Mary Magdalena Blanar in 1967.
She worked at FE Schumacher for 44 years where she was a payroll secretary until the doors closed in 2008. After retirement she enjoyed working as a waitress and was involved in local elections. She was known for her immaculate yard and garden, flower beds throughout her yard, and her hard work. She was proud of her Orthodox faith and her home in Hartville for 57 years. Most of all, she loved and was proud of her family and children.
Sophia was an active member at St. Nicholas Orthodox Church in Mogadore, Ohio where she served in many roles including: church board secretary, member in the ¨Senior O Club¨, working the annual Something Russian Festival and bowling in many FOCA tournaments. She offered her hands to the Church for many workshops baking kolachi, cookies, and pinching pierogis. She mostly will be remembered for being the "coffee lady" for over 30 years. In 2021, she received an award for her years of service to St. Nicholas, presented by Bishop Paul.
Leaving to cherish the legacy of her work-ethic and her wonderful cooking are her children Stephen Blanar (Joy) and Stephanie Higginbotham (Scott). Sophia was the most wonderful cherished "Bub" to Nicholas Higginbotham (Mary), Matthew Higginbotham (Maria), Jessica Didomenico (David), Megan Hill (Austin) and Mark Blanar. She was a
"Big Bub" to Greyson, Giana and Grady Higginbotham, and Jon and Natalie Carmichael. They would always put a smile on her face even on her more difficult days.
Sophia had a large family and was also a Godmother to David Kudelko. She leaves behind many nieces and nephews, friends, her church family, and her most caring neighbors. Thank you to caregivers Katie Theis, Joyce Yoder and Amanda Kaley. Special thank you to Heartland Hospice including Kathy and Jodi for their care and support during her last few weeks.
The family will receive friends on Sunday, December 22 from 4:00-7:00PM at St. Nicholas Orthodox Church, 755 S. Cleveland Ave, Mogadore Ohio 44260, where a parastas will be held at 7PM. Funeral services will be held on Monday, December 23 at 11:00AM at the church, where the family will receive friends beginning at 10:00AM. Burial at St. Nicholas Cemetery.
