Peter James Leahy, 79, died Wednesday, July 16, 2025, following a brief illness.
Born in Jersey City, New Jersey, Peter was raised in Bayonne, New Jersey, by his late parents, Peter and Rita Leahy. He received his education at St. Peter's Preparatory School and St. Peter's College in Jersey City, and went on to earn his doctorate from Syracuse University in 1975.
Peter was dedicated to his career as a professor, teaching at Texas Christian University, Southern Methodist University, the University of Akron, and concluding his career at Kent State University.
Beyond his professional life, Peter was an avid gardener, lifelong learner, and enthusiastic traveler who found great joy by the water.
Peter is survived by his wife of 56 years, Mary (Donlon); his children, Elizabeth (Jonathan) Coldren, Megan Leahy, and Emmet Leahy; and his grandchildren, Aidan and Niamh Coldren. He also leaves behind his sister, Kathryn Spaven.
The family extends their sincere gratitude to the staff at Pebble Creek Health Center for their compassionate care during Peter's final days.
A memorial service will be celebrated on Saturday, August 2, at 11:00AM at the Anthony Funeral Home - Akron Chapel, 1990 S Main St in Akron, where the family will receive friends beginning at 10:00AM. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Akron-Canton Regional Foodbank:
