Michael David Jewell, of Akron, Ohio, passed away unexpectedly on March 23, 2026 at the age of 84.

Michael was born in Burgaw, North Carolina, to Raymond and Irene (LaViska) Jewell, the third of five children. From an early age, his persistence and naturally optimistic spirit helped him overcome challenges and build a life defined by resilience, kindness, and generosity. Throughout his life, he became a steady source of encouragement and strength to family and friends.

Above all, Michael prioritized his family and his faith. He shared 50 loving years of marriage with his wife, Karen. He was immensely proud of his two daughters, Rebecca and Rachel, and took great joy in watching their lives unfold. His family will always remember his steady presence, his sense of humor, and the quiet ways he showed his love and support.

Michael spent his career at the Akron Beacon Journal, where he worked for 37 years and served as a member and former president of the Local 182 Akron Typographical Union. An avid runner, Michael believed in challenging himself and staying active. He completed numerous marathons and half marathons and celebrated his 60th birthday by running 60 miles!

Retirement suited Michael well, as he continued to stay active and connected with others. He enjoyed meeting people and making new friends while working part-time at Chenoweth Golf Course, the Hampton and Holiday Inns in Green, and the Firestone Park YMCA. He also loved the outdoors, spending time cycling, hiking, and later walking the beautiful trails of the Summit Metro Parks. Travel was another joy in his life, and he took many trips to stay close with lifelong friends and family.

Michael had a gift for brightening the lives of those around him. He was quick to smile, quick to offer a kind word, and quick to forgive. Even in difficult moments, he chose to see the best in people and encouraged others to do the same. His warmth, humor, and generous spirit left a lasting impression on everyone who knew him.

Michael was preceded in death by his brothers, Sonny and Richard. He is survived by his sisters, Page and Elaine; his beloved wife, Karen; his daughters, Rebecca and Rachel; sons-in-law, Tim and Mathew; and many nieces, nephews, and extended family members who will deeply miss him.
