Maurice Joseph Bassett, 92, passed away peacefully on June 29, 2026.
Born in Boscawen, New Hampshire, on March 29, 1934, Maurice was the son of the late Edward and Kathleen (Lynch) Bassett. He proudly served his country in the United States Navy during the Korean War as a radioman aboard a minesweeper. After returning home, he built a successful career in leather manufacturing, spending his working life in management. He lived in New Hampshire for nearly 60 years before relocating for work to Pennsylvania and Connecticut, eventually settling in Ohio in 2015.
Above all else, Maurice was devoted to his family. He shared an extraordinary 70-year marriage with the love of his life, Dorothy "Dottie" Bassett, a partnership built on unwavering love, laughter, and adventure. In their 40s, they became active members of the Fair Weather Riders motorcycle club, where they discovered a shared love of the open road. Maurice's adventurous spirit was contagious, encouraging Dottie to embrace new experiences right alongside him. They were also avid card players, and anyone who played cards with Maurice quickly learned he was fiercely competitive, and always the one keeping score. Whether they were traveling together, gathered around the card table, or simply enjoying the journey of everyday life, they made countless memories side by side.
Maurice never stopped learning. He loved technology, enjoyed figuring out how things worked, and embraced new innovations with the same curiosity throughout his life.
His greatest joy was always the people he loved. He was a steady presence, a loyal friend, and a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. His quiet strength, sharp mind, and gentle humor, will be deeply missed by everyone fortunate enough to know him.
In addition to his parents, Maurice was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Dorothy "Dottie" Bassett; his brothers, John, Raymond, and Eugene, and his twin sister, Kathy.
He is survived by his children, Maureen (Ron) Horn, Maurice (Kellie) Bassett Jr., and Tammy (John) Szaflarski; his grandchildren, Adam, Marissa, Reed, Hunter, Courtney, Stephanie, Erik, and Justin; and his great-grandchildren, Atticus, Kate, Elliott, Evan, Dylan, A.J., Melissa, Izzy, Covee Jo, Kohen, Penelope, Prudence, and Parker. He also leaves behind many cherished nieces, nephews, dear friends, and all whose lives were made richer by knowing him.
Interment will take place at a later date at the New Hampshire State Veterans Cemetery in Boscawen, New Hampshire.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made in Maurice or Dottie's memory to the Alzheimer's Association using this link.
