Obituary

Mary Jane (née Lyons) McMullin, 76, born and raised in Philadelphia, was the middle child and only daughter of John V. and Mary (née McGonigle) Lyons. Mary Jane attended St. Bridget's grade school and Hallahan Catholic Girls' High School, where she excelled in talking, enjoying herself and raising the ire of the nuns. She then matriculated to St. Joseph's College (Philadelphia) and both attended classes and worked in the Office of the Registrar. It was here where Mary Jane caught the eye and attention of a suitor and her eventual partner in life, Joseph R. McMullin. In addition to her beauty and sense of humor, Joseph was equally captivated by the size of her lunch bag and its contents. Armed with her Mrs. degree, Mary Jane left her beloved Philly for the Wild West, compliments of her Uncle Sam. On an Air Force base in Montana, Mary Jane welcomed two of her three children, Maureen and Joseph, Jr. Mary Katherine (Kassie), her third child, was born in Akron where the family settled for the next 45 years in Silver Lake. Mary Jane assumed her version of the traditional homemaker, which included heavy doses of humor, fun, and dinner parties. Opinions and wisdom were dispensed in equal measure with love. In the early years when budgets were tighter, Mary Jane perfected the art of shopping for deals. She honed this skill in years to come and would have outpaced any Fortune 500 procurement team in dollars "saved." As her children grew, Mary Jane returned to outside employment and found her niche as an office manager for a psychological practice. She enjoyed the work and the people – both providers and clients. As she gained experience and knowledge in her field, Mary Jane awarded herself her C.S.A. degree, Common Sense Approach, which in her opinion was often in short supply. Upon the birth of her first grandchild, Mary Jane transformed into Grammy. She hit her stride as the grandchildren grew and were able to accompany her on shopping and dining adventures as well as sleepovers. "Grammy's my name, spoiling's my game," read one of her ubiquitous aprons. Grammy developed wonderful personal and individual relationships with each of her six grandchildren. Kindness to others in need was one of Grammy's main hallmarks that she practiced and taught her family. Soup kitchens, breakfast bars at the ready for panhandlers, and untold numbers of hospital and nursing home visits to friends and, in many instances, simply acquaintances just begin to scratch the surface. A welcoming spirit was yet another attribute. Grammy would happily squeeze another plate and chair around her already crowded dining room table. The more the merrier was ever present in her demeanor. On April 27th, Mary Jane returned to the loving arms of God the Father. It was a joyous reunion for her and Kassie, who predeceased her in 2004. She is also predeceased by her parents and her two brothers, John Jr. and Edward. Grammy leaves behind Joseph, her companion of 54 years; daughter Maureen Michalak; son Joseph, Jr (Ann Marie); son-in-law and adopted daughter in-law Michael and Kim Biglow; and grandchildren: Molly, Michael & Allie, Sean, Katherine and Joseph Patrick. Mary Jane also leaves behind countless friends who have enriched each others' lives and have served as a lodestar of what true friendship entails. Grammy loved her husband, children, grandchildren and friends unconditionally. "You can tell we are Christians by our love."
