Mary Magdalene Hittie was born November 29,1924 to Nicholas Komarnitzky and Eva (Gamella)Komarnitzky in Barnesboro, Pennsylvania. She died June 28, 2021.
She was preceded in death by her parents; siblings Olga Mosyjowski (Michael), Mike, Ann, Theodore, Alec, and John (Jann) Komarnitzky and Vera Gmuca (Richard); and son-in-law John Staley. She leaves behind, daughter, Cheryll Hittie-Staley; grandchildren Andrew (Katha) Staley, Rachelle (Jason) Rose, Richard (Jennifer) Staley; great-grandchildren Michael, Liam & Frida Staley and Piper Rose; many dear nieces and nephews; as well as special friends Linda Soltis and Brent Dugan.
Mary was the fifth of eight children. When their father died all seven (at the time) were taken from their mother and their home and placed in the Cambria County Children's Home. Mary was adopted by Mrs. William (Jennie) Hittie of Carrolltown, Pa. where she went to school and worked on the farm. While living there, Mary met Edna (McNulty) Kontorchik and the two became lifelong friends, visiting often over the years. Mary supported herself and her daughter working as a waitress at Jim's Steak House in Cleveland and later in Akron at Tangiers and The Diamond Grille. After many years of loyal service, she retired from Nick Anthe's. She maintained a hearty respect for her fair-minded & generous boss, Nick, along with many long-lasting friendships.
In retirement, Mary lived in the Sutliff Apartments in Cuyahoga Falls, and at the Villa at Marian Park in Firestone Park. She remained curious and open-minded and active in OASIS- sponsored activities. She enjoyed Tai Chi, golf, folk dancing, tennis, hiking, camping, knitting, sewing, reading and playing cards with family and friends. She did beautiful counted cross stitch. When grandkids came along, she was always willing to help. She loved spending time with them and hearing about their lives. She was a kind, attentive and helpful grandma. She will be missed, but our memories of her serve as reminders to be our best selves: to be generous and flexible with others, to count our blessings, and to be positive.
Mary was especially grateful to Olga, her oldest sister. Olga, through persistence and patience, reconnected all eight siblings. As a result, their families were able to enjoy many holidays, birthdays and vacations with each other. Olga also opened her heart to her niece, Cheryll, caring for her so Mary, a single mother, could work without worrying.
Mary often said her biggest and best accomplishment in life was her daughter. Her pride was outweighed only by her love. It remains an unbreakable bond.
Special thanks to the many nurses, aides and staff at St Luke Lutheran Community- Portage Lakes. Your experience, patience and humor were invaluable.
