Obituary
Marie Elizabeth Richardson passed away on January 18, 2022, at the home of her son in Green, Ohio. She was born December 7, 1940, in Manhattan, New York, the 3rd child and only daughter of Henry and Kathryn (nee Kane) Rogers. Marie grew up in Woodside, Queens and graduated from Holy Cross Academy in Manhattan.
She married Robert Richardson on December 16, 1961, at St. Theresa's Catholic Church in Woodside, Queens. Marie and Bob lived in New Jersey, and had two sons there, Mark and Michael. The family moved to South Charleston, WV in 1971 when Bob, who was working at Union Carbide, Bound Brook, NJ, was transferred to the Technical Center. While living in South Charleston, Marie got her Associate Degree in Computer Science at Morris Harvey College (now University of Charleston). Marie worked and retired from Union Carbide.
In retirement, she enjoyed volunteering at Thomas Memorial Hospital in South Charleston. After Bob passed away in 2007, she moved to Morgantown, West Virginia to be closer to her grandchildren. She continued her volunteer efforts at WVU Hospitals and the Rosenbaum House.
Marie was an amazing and tough individual. While at the gym doing leg presses at 80 years of age, she broke her leg. She walked to her car and drove herself to the urgent care facility. One Xray later, she then was sent to WVU Hospitals. Scans of her broken leg revealed the presence of cancer, and a biopsy confirmed the diagnosis. After her leg was repaired, she was up and mobile in short order to the amazement of everyone. As the disease progressed, she moved in with her son Mark in Green, Ohio for her final months.
She was predeceased by her husband, parents, and siblings. She is survived by her sons, Mark in Green, Ohio and Michael (Beth) in Wayne, PA; 4 grandchildren; Malia, Alex, Zach, and Julia, daughter-in-law Tia, and granddogs Emily and Straizee.
Per her wishes, she is being cremated and a private ceremony will be held at a later date. Final internment will be at the Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church Columbarium in South Charleston, WV, where she will be reunited with her husband, Bob.
The family wishes to thank the many medical professionals who took care of her at WVU Hospitals, Summa Health Care, and Hospice of the Western Reserve (thank you especially Alicia, Tammy, Darlene, Jackie and all the others who provided such generous care in her final moments and reassured a worried family that she was made comfortable).
In lieu of flowers please consider donating the Rosenbaum House in Morgantown, West Virginia or your favorite charity.
