Lorraine Ann (Miller) Steidl

June 29, 1928 — November 30, 2020

Lorraine Steidl, of Cuyahoga Falls, passed away peacefully after a brief battle with cancer on November 30, 2020 at the age of 92. Lorraine moved to Akron in 1950 from upstate New York after graduating from Simmons College with a degree in library science. She later earned a master's in education from the University of Akron. Her first job was with the Akron Public Library. She also told children's stories on Saturday mornings on the WAKR radio show Tip Top Tales. She brought comfort to the patients hospitalized in the burn unit at children's hospital by reading stories to them. She also worked as a children's librarian for the then-named Taylor Memorial Public Library in Cuyahoga Falls, volunteered for its Friends of the Library and served one year as the group's president. She was instrumental in setting up the card catalogue system for the Immaculate Heart of Mary School library. She briefly volunteered as a docent for the Akron Museum of Art, and for Project Learn of Summit County. She was an avid reader who continued to stay current on best-sellers and award-winners, especially in the field of young adult and children's literature. She was quick to make the perfect book recommendation to or find the perfect book as a gift for others. Her collection of children's books focused on her favorite authors, illustrators, and pop-up books. She also enjoyed finding "treasures" at yard sales and was often seen bicycling to yard sales throughout Cuyahoga Falls. Her family has fond memories of her home-baked cookies and willingness to try new recipes, which eventually became family favorites. She enjoyed live theatre and, along with her husband Frank, was a longtime subscriber to and regular audience member at the Porthouse Theatre. Lorraine had a warm, welcoming presence about her, accepted others, never seemed to have an unkind word to say about anyone, and was a person who always managed to find the positive in life and be grateful. She was a member of Immaculate Heart of Mary Parish in Cuyahoga Falls. Lorraine will be missed by her loving husband of 67 years, Frank; children Tom, Paul, Joan, Nancy, Mike, and Ed; 6 grandchildren, 2 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. Cremation has taken place and a private interment will take place at Chestnut Hill Memorial Park in Cuyahoga Falls. If people would like to make a donation in Lorraine's memory the family would suggest the Friends of Cuyahoga Falls Library or do something nice for someone as she did throughout her life.
