Leonard Giorgio, age 102, died peacefully at home on December 7, 2025 with family ushering him into heaven after a very long and fruitful life.
Born in Akron on August 22, 1923, Leonard attended North High School and the University of Akron, with his college education interrupted to serve our country in World War II. He served in the Army 45th Division, 180th Infantry Regiment as a radio operator with most of his time overseas spent in Italy and France. He was awarded the Combat Infantry Medal and French Legion of Honor Medal. Upon returning from war he completed his degree in Business Administration from UA in 1948. This was followed by a 40 plus year career as a salesman for the Brown-Graves Lumber Co. as well as many years spent in the Navy Reserves, continuing to serve our country.
Leonard cherished relationships and enjoyed playing poker with friends and family, sharing holiday meals with authentic home-cooked Italian food, and a glass of red wine with every dinner. Simple pleasures kept him light-hearted. He was known for never being able to tell a joke without bursting out in laughter before the punch line. He had a spirit of generosity, a willingness to lend a hand to anyone who needed it, and shared his time and treasure with others. Leonard lived many of his twilight years in good health in no small measure due to the loving and careful attention provided by his devoted caregiver, Kim Blankenship.
Leonard married the love of his life, Grace Scarpitti, in 1953 and they had two children, Susan and Gary. Widowed in 1992 after 39 years of marriage, he subsequently married Grace Mondi and they shared 25 years together until her death in 2019.
In addition to his two wives, Leonard was preceded in death by parents Rocco and Giovina, brother Domenic (Colleen), and sister Marian (Larry) Yacovazzi. He is survived by daughter Susan, son and daughter in law Gary and Teresa, grandchildren Marie (Josh) Horner, Thomas (Ashlee), Daniel (Ana), Joseph, Monica (Jamie Peel), Katherine (Joud) Roufael, Michael (Zhafira), Nicholas, Gianna, and Samuel, and 5 great grandchildren. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews, and his second wife's children and grandchildren, including special granddaughter Grace Stair who called and visited frequently.
In addition to thanking caregiver Kim Blankenship for over 8 years of service, our family extends its thanks to the wonderful team from Summa Hospice that helped us guide Dad as comfortably as possible into eternal life.
