Leon Nels

December 2, 1925 — February 16, 2025

The World lost a kind Christian gentleman on February 16, 2025. Leon Nels was born over 99 years ago on December 2, 1925, at his home in Akron. His mother, Josephine (Jozefa Strazisar) Nels Barich, a first generation immigrant mail order bride from Slovenia, was in his words "the best Mom I could have." In his youth, Leon participated in the soap box derby despite living in near poverty. In his life Leon was known never to complain and always had a smile for everyone.
He became a respected accomplished finish carpenter when his sister, Albina, suggested her husband, Jerry, hire Leon as an apprentice following Leon's brief but honorable Army service in 1944 during World War II. Leon would grace the skies in light planes after learning to fly at Ling Field. They were mostly uneventful flights; except the time the throttle control fell off, not allowing the engine to be throttled back at landing. Years later, Leon was treated to a short stay in Cuba when the airline in which he was a passenger was hijacked, delaying his arrival in Daytona to watch a motorcycle race. He enjoyed golfing, canoeing and riding his motorcycle in his free time.
Leon built two houses that turned into home for him and his wife Rosemary. Rosemary preceded him in death after 63 years of marriage. Leon always had a picture of Rosemary in his wallet, and he was Rosemary's faithful caretaker during her extended illness, often singing 'you are my sunshine' to her. While there were no children of his own, he was admired by his nephews, especially when he hosted the family reunion and hooked up the garden tractor to a wagon. His nephews included Joseph Grimsic, Fred Snyder, Rudy Calet, Alan Beavers, David Mark, Hobby Nels, Terry Nels and Albert Leon Nels.
He was preceded in death by his siblings including Albina Snyder, Albert Nels, Jacob Nels, Josephine Grimsic, Tresa Nels and Paula Beavers.
In more recent years, Leon needed assistance to stay in his home. The family thanks his many caretakers under the leadership of Teresa Perrot for their focus on his quality of life.
Private services will follow at a later date. In lieu of flowers the family suggests you donate to a charity of your choice.
