John H. Lewis, 72, passed away Monday, January 29, 2024, peacefully in his sleep. He was born in Akron to Joy and Richard Lewis. He was a proud father who worked tirelessly to provide for his family. John was a 1969 graduate of Cuyahoga Falls High School and lifelong resident. After high school he went off to work at Alside as a steelworker. After many years at Alside, he went on to work for Roadway/ Yellow Freight and was a member of Teamsters Local 24 until he retired.
John loved competition, especially in any sort of game and sport. He excelled in baseball, basketball, softball, golf and was an avid bowler; he bowled 8 perfect games in his lifetime. He passed on his love for competition to his children at a young age, teaching them how to play sports, getting them to practice every day, coaching their teams, and he never missed a game. In recent years, you'd find him cheering on his grandsons at all their events as he was always their number one fan.
John was a devoted husband to his childhood sweetheart, Brenda whom he was married to for 51 years. He enjoyed playing Euchre, boating and endured having his heart broken by his beloved Cleveland sports teams. After retirement, John enjoyed lunch with his buddies, golfing, and playing cards and bingo with friends. Family was especially important to John, and he loved spending time with them. His weekday afternoons were spent picking his grandsons up from school and taking them to their favorite spots for an afternoon snack.
John was preceded in death by his wife, Brenda (Harris); infant daughter, September Diane Lewis; Mother Joy (Ernie) Chadwick; and brother-in-law Ted Vaughn. He is survived by his children, Candace Kim-Knox (James Knox), Arianne Lipinski (James), Matthew Lewis (Katherine) and Jonathan Lewis (Ericka); grandchildren, James, Hayden, Landon, Lucas, Carter, Cameron, Nathan, Gavin, Braxton and Kaysen; father Richard Lewis; sisters Dianne Vaughn, Tina Chadwick (Mark McDougal), Lisa (Terry) Parks, Debbie Genovese (Dave), & Karen Lyons; and many nieces and nephews.
