-CUYAHOGA FALLS
Born in Akron, Ohio on November 27, 1927 John B. "Jack" Costigan died peacefully on August 1 after a brief illness. He was surrounded by his loving daughters.
Jack grew up and spent his entire life in Cuyahoga Falls. After graduating from St Joseph Grade School, he attended St. Vincent High School, leaving school to join the Navy during World War II. He was very proud of his service on the USS Huntington. (The" nuns gave him his diploma" when he returned home after the War)
After the War, Jack joined the US Postal Service as a mailman, fell in love with Joan Mary Berg, they married, and together they made a happy home for themselves and their six daughters. Later he worked at B.F. Goodrich, first in the hose room, then as the mail room supervisor. In retirement, he and Joan volunteered with the Earth Care program at Weaver School and Workshop helping the clients learn about plants and gardening. He became friends with the staff and clients, bringing cookies and candy to the clients. One of the clients communicated in sign language. Jack went to the library, checked out a book on sign language and learned to sign so he could communicate with him!
Jack was a lifetime member of St Joseph Parish, volunteering as an usher, and as a member of the St. Vincent dePaul Society.
Jack never met a stranger, if he thought he knew you, he would approach you and ask:"Do I know you?" Usually after a few minutes of conversation, they would find that they knew each other or had some friends in common. He was known for his love of hats, often attracting attention from strangers and then conversations!
Dad encouraged education, the love of reading and eating, helping others, and exercise. But most of all, he modeled his love for Joan, and honored their commitment each day. When our Mom's health started to fail, he lovingly cared for her at home, when her needs were more than could be managed at home, she moved to a nursing facility. He visited her every day, always asking her "are you still crazy about me?" There is a quote: One of the greatest things a father can do for his children is to love their mother- Well done, Dad!
Jack is survived by his adoring daughters: Molly, Julie (Mark) Roberts, Barbara (Kevin) Sohner, and Peggy (Don) Reagan; his cherished grandchildren: Megan Roberts Esterling (spouse Carter) Emily Roberts Griffin (spouse: Christopher), John Sohner (spouse: Jessica), and Donnie Reagan, Jr.; and great -grandchildren: Genevieve Esterling, and Jack and Luke Sohner, and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his beloved daughters Joanie and Rosie Costigan, parents Thomas and Loretta Costigan and siblings Mary Jo Bedell, Tom Costigan, and J. Patrick Costigan.
The family would like to extend our deepest gratitude to the many relatives, friends, and neighbors (especially on 8th Street and Christy Drive) who through the years took our Dad out for meals, provided treats, and most of all time and friendship. The caring staff and residents of Cardinal Village Retirement Village made his last years happy ones. Thank you to the caring nursing staff at Western Reserve Hospital and Hospice of the Western Reserve who provided comfort to Jack and his daughters.
