Jere Michael Doherty

Jere Michael Doherty, 86, passed away January 21, 2018. Jere was born November 18, 1931 to Dan and Maggie (Rech) Doherty at St. Thomas Hospital in Akron, Ohio. He graduated from St. Paul Catholic Grade School in 1945 and Garfield High School in 1949 and attended the University of Akron. On September 26, 1953 he and the great love of his life Anne Elizabeth Jakubisin were married at St. John Catholic Church in Akron, Ohio; together they raised their four children in Firestone Park. Jere was a life member of St. Paul Catholic Church and also a member of Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church. Jere was a member of the Ancient Order of Hibernians since 1954 and a decreed member since 1970, Mark Hepfernan Division, Firestone Park Seniors, AARP # 1715, VFW 3383, NRA and Marine Corps Association; he also volunteered for various causes. He loved to travel with "Annie" (her bags were always packed). He is survived by his children: Tim and Becky Doherty of Hattiesburg, MS, Shawn and Pamela Doherty of Uniontown, OH, Mary Doherty of Akron, OH. Grandchildren Max, Mikalah, Brittney, Kevin Doherty, Britney Webster, Sean and Matthew Nicholas. Great Granddaughters Braylee McGuire and Alaina Webster. Sister in law Mildred Zenner, nieces, nephews and cousins. Preceded in death by his beautiful bride Anne of 55 years (a part of Jere died with her), daughter Kathleen Anne Doherty, infant granddaughter Kathleen Anne Doherty (Tim and Becky's daughter), grandson Zachary Doherty (Shawn and Pamela's son) parents Dan and Maggie Doherty, in-laws George and Josephine Jakubisin, sisters Eileen and Jeanne, brothers Jack, Jim, and Robert. Jere was a proud member of the United States Marine Corps and served in Korea with the first Marine Division, earning among other awards a combat citation ribbon on June 26, 2006, the 60th anniversary of the outbreak of the Korean War. Jere received a letter from Kim Doue-jung, President of the Republic of South Korea thanking him for his participation in the Korean War and awarded him a 50th Anniversary War Service Medal. Once a Marine always a marine. The family will receive friends on Thursday, 4-7 pm, at the Anthony Funeral Home Kucko-Anthony-Kertesz Chapel, 1990 S. Main St., Akron. OH 44301. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, 10 am, At St. Paul Catholic Church in Akron. Interment will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery in Akron. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Jere's memory can be made to St. Paul Catholic Church. (Anthony, AKRON)
