James Stanley Marshall

January 22, 1941 — September 16, 2023

James Stanley Marshall, age 82, passed away on Saturday, September 16, 2023.

Jim, as he was known by his friends and family, was born on January 22, 1941, to Herbert Leeroy and Mary Rita (Honeywell) Marshall in Akron, Ohio. Jim lived most of his life on "The Hill". He graduated from Akron North High School and was an accomplished athlete running track where he broke school records in the 100 meter dash and relay events. After high school, Jim went on to serve his country and enlisted in the U.S. Army from 1963 to 1969 and was honorably discharged. During this time, Jim started his family by having two children, Christopher and Sherri. Jim then began his career with General Metals Powder Company (GEMPCO) as a machinist making clutch plates. He worked tirelessly, and largely without complaint, for 39 years, and not just because he enjoyed the work, but because he wanted to provide for his family.

In 1972, Jim met the love of his life Carol Ann Horning at an old bar on The Hill called Leo's Pub. They married on June 29, 1974, in Akron, and were married for 49 years. Jim and Carol welcomed three children... Mary, Tim, and Andy... and as his kids grew, his true adventures began. An avid sports fan, Jim coached his all of his kids in the sport of baseball in one way or another, but he served as a team coach for 9 years for the North Akron Baseball Association. He was also a Cub Scout and Boy Scout leader for nearly the same period. Jim was a coach and father figure to so many and he valued that responsibility.

Jim not only loved coaching sports, but he also had true love for all Ohio sports. Especially the Ohio State Buckeyes, the Browns, the Cavaliers, and the Guardians. Jim's level of excitement was contagious, and all of his kids grew up die hards too.

Jim had many other passions. He loved gardening. Mostly flowers. Tulips, daffodils, lilies, and marigolds to name a few. He could grow just about any flower you asked him to and if there was an open spot in the yard available, he would fill it. He loved airplanes. Mostly planes from the World War II era and he loved American history too. He was well known for telling stories about his favorite periods of time.

What was always most important to Jim was family. Not just biological family. Family came from all over as far as Jim was concerned. And he loved his family with his whole heart for his whole life.

Jim is survived by his wife Carol (Horning), sons Christopher, Timothy (Rachel), and Andrew (Jillian), daughters Sherri and Mary, grandchildren Kody (Jessica), Katlyn (Stratton), Andon, Ashton, Kylie, Kyle, Drew, and he even had a few great-grandchildren too.

Family and friends will be welcomed at a private event on October 7, 2023. For details on Jim's memorial, please contact Mary at 330-256-6413 or Tim at 330-244-6380.
