James (Jim) William Angel of Green, Ohio, 89, passed away at home with family on May 26, 2024.
Jim was born on May 20, 1935, in Jellico, TN to Lewis Claude and Mary Ruth Angel. He was raised in Akron, Ohio and attended David Hill Elementary, graduated from Garfield High School, and attended the University of Akron and Goodyear's Machinist Apprentice Program simultaneously. He was also proud to serve as a member and past president of the Society of Manufacturing Engineers and additionally taught evening classes in that role. Jim retired from Goodyear after almost 43 years of service. He was also a member of the U.S. Navy Reserves.
Jim was married to his wife, Marie, for 66 years. Together they enjoyed traveling (visited 42 countries), camping, and attending sporting events and concerts. One of Jim's favorite pastimes was spending time at Dogskin Camp (as co-owner of a hunting cabin in southern Ohio). Jim was generous with hosting friends and family at Dogskin and while hunting deer and turkey were the main attraction for him, his family will miss all the other activities like riding dirt bikes (Jim got his motorcycle license at age 80!), playing music while sitting around the campfire, watching the grandkids catch crawdads, skeet shooting, canoeing, and just enjoying the wildlife. Jim's family is grateful to his Dogskin partners and neighbors for their friendship and loyalty.
Jim was a man of many talents, interests, and hobbies most of which involved being outside whether he was walking in the woods, riding a bike, cruising or fishing on a boat, or just enjoying the back porch. He liked golf, bird watching, astronomy, fishing trips to Canada, and eagerly awaited the arrival of Ohio corn and tomatoes every season. Inside interests were also many and diverse. He loved to read (books and maps), work crossword puzzles, drink fine wine and whiskey, play cards, listen to music (mostly bluegrass but he also loved classical and Baptist hymns), and being a member of the Hibernian Club. He was very organized as shown by the many lists, labels, and rubber bands throughout his home. He loved to tinker, fix things, and build better mousetraps. He was warm and inviting to guests and family, always making them feel welcome and important.
Jim is preceded in death by his son, Michael, and siblings Lewis, Gene, Marylou Johnson, and Wayne. He is survived by his wife Marie; his sister Barb (Vince) Brandtner of Roanoke, VA; his son Timothy (Jeannie) Angel of Green, Ohio, grandchildren Tim (Jessica) Angel, great grandchildren Aiden and Tripp of Wadsworth, OH; Jacob Angel of Portage Lakes, OH; James Angel of Green, OH; his daughter Jennifer (Lee) Wilson of Oberlin, Ohio, grandchildren Olivia (Matt) Clokey, great grandchildren Mila and Mason of Jackson Township, OH; and Samuel Wilson of Strongsville, OH; as well as many nieces, nephews, and extended family.
