Jacques Burrell

Jacques Irving Burrell died in Port Saint Lucie, Florida, on Tuesday, August 8, 2023 at Harbor Place Assisted Living.
He was born on January 21, 1921, in Akron, the son of Edward and Victoria (Kihm) Burrell. He attended St. Paul Catholic grade school and graduated from Garfield High School. He then attended Akron University, where he earned a degree in Horticulture and Botany and was a member of Phi Delta Theta fraternity. Jacques was a veteran, having served in the US Navy as Radioman First Class. He often said those were the best years of his life. After his service he helped his father run Burrell's restaurant on State Road in Cuyahoga Falls. Jacques worked for Good Year of Akron from 1950-55 and as a sales manager with 3M for twenty-seven years, retiring in 1982. He and his wife, Dorothy, moved to Port Saint Lucie, Florida, in 1984. They were both avid golfers and enjoyed the opportunity to play often. Jacques was a Master Gardener for thirty plus years and gave many volunteer hours at the Saint Lucie Botanical Gardens and the Club Med Saints golf course in Port Saint Lucie where he planted over four hundred flowering trees and shrubs which he grew himself from starts. Besides golf, Jacques loved playing tennis, having political conversations, and doing daily crossword puzzles.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Eva Burrell, his sons, Lynn and Mark Burrell, and his wife of over 50 years, Dorothy (Murphy) Burrell. He leaves one grandson, Christopher (Amy) Burrell of Cuyahoga Falls and two great grandchildren. Also surviving are his stepson, Scott (Sue) Murphy of Cuyahoga Falls and Mary Murphy of Green, the wife of his stepson, Chris, who also preceded him in death. He will be missed by family and friends.
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Saturday, September 23 at 10 AM at St. Paul Parish, 1580 Brown St in Akron. Burial will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery.
