George F. Schumacher

September 4, 1949 — August 17, 2017

On Thursday, August 17, 2017, Dad rounded third and slid into home plate, and was called 'Safe' into the loving arms of his Savior.
George was born September 4, 1949 in Akron, to the late Frank & Ruth Schumacher. A lifelong area resident, George was employed by the City of Akron Water Department for 33 years. He was active in the Soap Box Derby, and enjoyed attending the Barberton Speedway and the Orrivlle Raceway. He attended the former First Grace United Church of Christ and was a church bus driver for 25 years. George was a bowling coach for the Children's Bowling League in Akron and acted as secretary of the Bowling Association. George was also the very first bowling coach at Hoban High School and worked as the Hoban sports equipment manager for over 25 years.
In addition to his parents, George was preceded in death by his Grandmother Beatrice Hoeferle. George is survived by his loving wife of 44 years, Patricia (Fortney); daughters Amanda Schumacher and Dawn (Randy) Newman; brother Harold (Linda); sisters Mary Ann and Ruth Ann Schumacher; and three grandchildren.
A celebration of George's life will take place Saturday, September 2, 2017 at 10 a.m. at Westminster Presbyterian Church, 1250 W. Exchange St. in Akron. Interment at Mount Peace Cemetery. Per George's wishes, absolutely no flowers please. Donations may be made to a charity of your choice. (Kucko-Anthony-Kertesz Chapel, Akron)
