George B. McMullen, 82, of Canal Fulton was carried home by the Lord on November 30, 2024.
George grew up in Kenmore and moved to Canal Fulton in 1973 with his young family. While he was proud to have worked for the city of Akron and Ohio Brass, he spent the majority of his career as a maintenance mechanic for Diamond Crystal Salt (aka Akzo Nobel and currently Cargill).
Despite the many challenges he faced in life, those who knew George know that there was no "quit" in him and he maintained his "I've survived everything that's been thrown at me so far. I will beat this too!" attitude right to the end. He may have been small in stature, but that he survived 82 years, as he would proudly tell you "with his tonsils and appendix", despite polio, cancer, and 21 surgeries, is a testament to his fortitude and incredible strength.
Though he may have struggled to show it in his younger years, George was an incredibly empathetic soul who always cheered for the underdog or anyone he knew "had it worse than" him. If he ever witnessed you being picked on, or saw you struggling, or heard your story, you can be certain that he still thought about you and was rooting for you until he breathed his last breath, no matter how many years ago he knew you.
The only passion George could never hide was his love of THE Ohio State Buckeyes football. He was rarely seen without Buckeyes apparel and he could tell you everything you never knew you needed to know about the incoming class of recruits, the strength of schedule, or the NFL draft prospects. While we have lost our favorite Buckeye fan, George will now forever have the best seat in The Shoe!
George is survived by his beloved "Pretty Woman" and wife of 55 years, Brenda; son Aron of Canal Fulton; daughter Kim (Carolyn) of Massillon; grandchildren Katie and Seth of Massillon, Eric (Grace Kemerer) Rachita of Minneapolis, MN, and Sarah (Ben Rutledge) Rachita of Chapel Hill, NC; sister Mildred Ball; brother Rick (Marty) McMullen; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Ruthvan and Edith McMullen; brothers William Blackburn, Hank Lambert, and Ed McMullen; and sisters Mulvina Kennedy and Edie Howell-Clark.
Calling hours and viewing will be held on Wednesday, December 4th from 4-7pm at Anthony Funeral Home, 1990 S. Main Street, Akron, OH 44301. In honor of George, we encourage you to celebrate him by wearing your Ohio State apparel.
