Francis ("yes, but I want to be Frank with you") Phillip Berdyck, 94, passed away peacefully in his home on May 14, 2026, after spending the weeks, days, and hours prior surrounded by his family and loved ones.
Frank was born in 1931 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, to parents Floriana and Francis Berdyck, whose family later moved to Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio, in 1941. He was a graduate of Cuyahoga Falls High School, Class of 1950, and remained a lifelong resident of the Akron area.
Over the years, Frank held many different jobs and embraced each experience with curiosity and determination. As a young man, he manually set pins at a local bowling alley, worked as an usher at the neighborhood movie theater, and even piloted the Goodyear "Stag Beer" blimp. He later retired as Head Draftsman for the Summit County Engineer's Office, where he contributed technical engineering drawings and county infrastructure planning throughout a long career of public service.
Frank was an engineer at heart and possessed countless practical skills. He loved woodworking, auto repair, and could fix just about anything around the house using whatever tools and materials he had on hand. He enjoyed football, tennis, diving, and for many years was an avid runner at the Cuyahoga Falls Natatorium. Summers were often spent enjoying Lake Erie, visiting Cedar Point, and relaxing at Water Works Pool in Cuyahoga Falls. He also loved his morning trips to McDonald's for coffee and a big breakfast, as well as spending time in the food court at Summit Mall, contentedly watching passersby and enjoying the simple rhythms of everyday life. In more recent years, he spent countless hours playing WWII games - especially the OG Wolfenstein - on his beloved Xbox, playing right up until the last days. Known for his humor, wit, wisdom, and independent spirit, he brought laughter and stories wherever he went. He was thoughtful and reflective, often sharing favorite sayings and life lessons, including one he repeated often: "The best time to slow down is when you are in a hurry."
Frank was preceded in death by his parents; his sister, Floriana Hall (Robert); his brother, Robert Berdyck; his daughter, Christie Lynn Conrad (Bruce); and his son, Jeffrey Berdyck.
He is survived by his daughter, Lori E. (Berdyck) Gerber of Fairlawn; grandchildren Leo, Ayla Francie, Amie (Doug), Melissa (Todd), Holly (Mark), Shannon (James), and Matthew; nieces Cindy (Larry), Marlene (Don), and Joyce (Ed); nephews Bobby (Jan) and Davd (Jean); as well as many great-grandchildren, great-nieces, and great-nephews.
Frank will be remembered for his grace, patience, resourcefulness, sense of humor, and love he had for his family. He will be deeply missed.
Calling hours will be held Friday, May 22 from 5:00-7:00 PM at Anthony Funeral Home - Falls Chapel, 247 Stow Avenue in Cuyahoga Falls. Funeral service will take place Saturday, May 23 at the funeral home at 11:00 AM, where the family will receive friends for one hour prior beginning at 10:00 AM. Interment will follow the service at Oakwood Cemetery.
