Obituary

Dr. Joseph Edward Maybury passed away peacefully in his Deland, Florida home on Oct. 31, 2023. He was two days shy of his 95th birthday.

Born in Parkersburg, W. Va., on Nov. 2, 1928, Joseph epitomized the American dream.

A devout Catholic, he attended parochial school through grade 12. After high school, he attended Potomac State College, a two-year community college in Wheeling, W. Va. Upon completing his two-year degree, he transferred to West Virginia State University where he took his core science classes that qualified him to be accepted into Georgetown University's School of Dentistry. He graduated in 1953.

Right out dental school, he entered the Air Force as a commissioned officer during the Korean War and was stationed in Japan from 1953 to 1955.

He was then stationed at Bolling Air Force Base in Washington D.C. before entering the periodontology program at Tufts University. He received his certificate of periodontology in 1964.

He was stationed in Madrid, Spain until 1967. He became chair of the Department of Periodontology and Residency Program at Wright Patterson Air Force Base from 1967 to 1973. During his time at Wright Pat he was awarded fellowship into the American College of Dentists. He received the Lifetime Achievement Award in October, 2023.

In 1973, he was transferred to Wilford Hall USAF Medical Center at Lackland where he held the same position of chair of periodontology from 1973 to 1976.

He retired from the Air Force in 1976 as a lieutenant colonel and moved to Cleveland where he worked for 13 years half time in private practice and half time as an associate professor serving as director of the clinical residency program at Case Western Reserve University School of Dentistry.

He served as president of the Greater Cleveland Dental Society and sat on the board of directors with the American Academy of Periodontology. He was on the Executive Council of the American Academy of Periodontology.

A longtime wine collector, Joseph belonged to many wine groups in the Cleveland area including the Les Amis du Vin and the Commanderie de Bordeaux. He also founded the Cleveland chapter of the Chaine de Rotisseurs. In 2000, he was inducted into the prestigious wine group the Confrerie des Chevaliers du Tastevin in Beaune, France.

He retired in 1992 and moved to Hilton Head where he lived for 16 years. He moved to Deland to be near his much beloved parish, St. Thomas More church, where he was an active parishioner for nearly 20 years. An avid golfer, Joseph belonged to several golf clubs and golfed until his final year.

Joseph's wife of 64 years, Nena Joan Maybury, preceded him in death in 2019. He is survived by his brother, Robert Maybury and his three daughters, Mary Margaret Maybury, Susan Elizabeth (James) Gutierrez and Rebecca Ann (Robert) Bompiedi; four grandchildren, Jennifer (Matthew) Laughlin, Nicholas (Julie) Devries, Alaina and Gina Bompiedi; and three great grandchildren, Cameron Devries, Eva and Kira Laughlin.

Requiem Mass will be celebrated on Monday, Nov. 13 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Peregrine's Church in Richfield. Interment with military honors will take place at 2:15 at Ohio Western Reserve National Cemetery in Rittman, OH. Please arrive at the cemetery before 2:00.
