Carl S. Mashek, 88, passed away on March 3, 2026, peacefully surrounded by his loving family.
Carl was born on May 18, 1937, to the late Steve & Ethel Mashek and was a 1955 graduate of North High School. He served his country as a member of the US Army prior to the Vietnam War, attaining the rank of Captain. He received his bachelor's degree in education from the University of Akron and later earned his master's degree from Kent State University. Carl loved his God and was a life-long member of Zion Lutheran Church in Akron. He retired from Akron Public Schools after serving as Principal at Forest Hill Elementary, which he attended as a child, and Jackson Elementary. As a resolute member of AA for 44 years, Carl found strength in sobriety, carrying the message to countless others and living gratefully "One Day at a Time". He mentored many, always patient, understanding, and willing to listen.
After retiring, Carl pursued various dreams, such as residing in Florida, joining musical groups, honing photography skills, researching genealogy, supporting the NRA, and earning the role of second chair as an accomplished violinist for the Kent State Orchestra, as well as other hobbies. During this period, he took great pleasure in sharing his extensive Civil War book collection and playing a variety of musical instruments, including the guitar, violin, and piano. He also appreciated classical music, regularly met friends for lunch, enjoyed quality films, and supported the Cleveland Browns and Guardians/Indians alongside his children. He valued the relationships he had formed over the years and was very grateful to have met so many wonderful people.
Besides his parents, Carl was also preceded in death by his brother, Rev. John D. Mashek. His legacy continues through his children: Sheryl Plath, Daniel (Dawn) Mashek, Kimberly Mashek, and Steven (Kris) Mashek; as well as grandchildren Nick Plath, Christine (John) Wurgler, Matthew Mashek, Tyler Mashek, David (Ariel) Plath, Hannah (Matt) Winkler, Christopher Sipe, Emily and Sara Stewart; great-grandchildren Kayla and Preston Wurgler, and beloved kitty Luci. Besides keeping in touch with good friends, neighbors, former teachers and classmates, he is also survived by cousin and close friend Al Segedy, and dear friend and classmate Aggie Denning. Carl demonstrated remarkable resilience throughout his life, overcoming many challenges. Even during his last moments, he found great joy in his favorite things. His loss leaves us heartbroken, as he was an exceptional father, a loving grandfather, and a devoted friend who was deeply cherished and will always be missed. He is now at peace, walking the heavenly beach smiling down on all of us.
A celebration of Carl's life will take place on Thursday, March 12, 2026, at Anthony's Dunn-Quigley Stow Chapel, 3333 Kent Rd, Stow. The family will receive friends from 5:30-7:00 pm. A Memorial service immediately follows. Per Carl's wishes, cremation has taken place. A private Interment will take place at Northlawn Memorial Gardens in Cuyahoga Falls.
