Arthur "Art" Mileski passed away on Tuesday, January 19, 2021, quietly at home. Art was born on January 18, 1925, to Frank and Mary (Olczewski) Mileski. He attended St. Hedwig grade school, North High School and worked for the Firestone Tire & Rubber Company for 35 years as well as the Ohio State Department of Liquor Control for 11 years. Art was a long-time member of St. Paul Catholic Church where he was a founding member of its Booster Club as well as a past president of the Parish Council. He also belonged to the Polish Legion of American Veterans, the Polish Roman Catholic Union and the Polish National Alliance. He was member of the Knights of Columbus chapter 3410.
Art was the youngest of eight children. His father passed away during the great depression when he was six. After graduating from North High School, class of 1942, he attended the Army Specialized Training Program at the University of Iowa where he specialized in Eastern European languages in preparation for establishing a government in Prague after the war. He was sent to Europe and served as a forward observer with the field artillery of the 44th Infantry Division. He was awarded a Bronze Star with three devices for his activities in the Rhineland, Northern France and Central Europe campaigns.
On returning home, he was married for 65 years and raised six children. He took great pride in his family, employment at Firestone and especially of his activities in the racing and experimental area.
In his spare time, he played competitive softball into his 70's as a charter member of the Silver League; on the basketball court he had a deadly set shot that was effective in the 1950's and wowed the neighborhood kids in the 1970's; and he wore his American Bowling Congress watches proudly recognizing his 299 game as well as his high series. Art was a guy who did his job and, as a member of the "Greatest Generation," there cannot be a better superlative. He will be missed.
Art is survived by his wife Rosemary; his children: Michael Mileski (Sara), Mary Cutter (Bob), Stephen Mileski; Susan Modzeleski (Tom McGuire), Joan Hinkle (Mark) and Robert Mileski (Kari) as well as his Grandchildren: Michael Modzeleski (Ali), Thresa Slusher (Dean), Julia Cutter and Jack Hinkle.
He was preceded in death by brothers: Chester (who died in infancy), Stanley, Walter, Marion, and Chester; and sisters: Jane Gracan, Hedwig Popp and Phyllis (Lowry) Sellars.
