Alfred Joseph Magoline, Jr., Md

August 1, 1935 — April 14, 2025

Alfred "Fred" Joseph Magoline Jr., MD passed away peacefully on April 14, leaving behind an extraordinary legacy of compassion, service, and unwavering love. A devoted husband, father, grandfather, physician, and friend, Fred's life was a masterclass in kindness, humility, and generosity.
Born on August 1, 1935, in Brooklyn, New York, to Alfred and Anna Rose Magoline, Fred spent his early years in Baltimore before returning to Brooklyn and eventually settling in Akron, Ohio in 1949. He graduated from Buchtel High School in 1953, where he played baseball, and went on to attend Washington and Lee University, beginning his studies in engineering before discovering his true calling in medicine.
Fred earned his medical degree from Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine in 1961 and went on to serve his country in the United States Army Medical Corps. His distinguished military service included time at Tripler Army Hospital in Hawaii, a year as a Battalion Surgeon with the 65th Engineer Battalion, and a three-year Otolaryngology residency at the renowned Walter Reed Army Hospital in Washington, D.C. He concluded his service as Chief of the Otolaryngology Service at Womack Army Hospital at Fort Bragg and was awarded the Army Commendation Medal, retiring with the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. He was always very proud of and grateful for his time spent in the military.
After completing his military service, Fred returned to Akron and dedicated more than three decades to his practice in Otolaryngology. He was especially proud of his work at Akron Children's Hospital, where he served as Chief of the ENT Service and President of the Medical Staff in 2000. Known for his warmth, respect, and unwavering care for patients and colleagues alike, Fred left a profound mark on the medical community. His legacy will continue through the Dr. Alfred J. Magoline Endowed Chair in Otolaryngology at Akron Children's Hospital, a gift he was deeply proud to give.
Fred's belief in service extended far beyond his profession. He coached youth baseball, helped found the Revere Youth Football League, filmed high school football and basketball games, and tirelessly supported Revere athletics. As longtime president of the Revere Sports Booster Club, he was instrumental in funding the construction of the Field House, a legacy honored by his 2016 induction into the Revere Sports Hall of Fame.
Fred loved Sunday family dinners, annual Caribbean cruises, holidays in Sand Key, Florida, playing golf (proud Class C Champion at Fairlawn Country Club), and enjoying lunches and dinners with his lifelong dear friends. A man of many joys, he delighted in musical theater, crossword puzzles, Jeopardy!, and making his famous meatballs, ribs, and wontons for his family and friends.
Above all, Fred's greatest joy came from his family. He and his late wife of 61 years, Julia, raised four children and were blessed with a large and loving extended family. He was a steadfast presence in the lives of his children and grandchildren, never missing an opportunity to support, encourage, and celebrate them. Whether through a thoughtful gift, a proud proclamation of their accomplishments, or simply his steady love, Fred made each of them feel deeply cherished.
He is survived by his dear fiancée, Ethel Fox, with whom he shared great happiness in his final years. He leaves behind his sister, Helen Tripodi. He is also survived by his children - who were so blessed to have him as a father − Kathy (Matt) Bezbatchenko, Cynthia (Ed) Orlandi, Steven (Kathe) Magoline, and Michael (Susan) Magoline. Greatly missing their Papa are his adoring grandchildren Amy (Craig) Butler, Laura (David) Krehbiel, Matthew Bezbatchenko; Olivia Orlandi; Jared (Ashlyn) Magoline, Hailey Magoline, Justin (Julia) Magoline; Joseph Magoline and Anna Magoline. Papa was also blessed with great-grandchildren Catherine and William Butler; Charlie, Henry, and Teddy Krehbiel; and Maverick and Kaden Magoline.
He was, quite simply, the finest person we ever knew, and his loss is immeasurable. We will treasure our memories of him for the rest of our lives.
